In 2009, German actress Diane Kruger was the best-dressed celebrity at all events. She shone like few could, with the best dress for every occasion. She has a way of making things look easy and is a natural when wearing the biggest names.

Blake Lively, after a few early warning signs, was a name that really took off in 2009. Gossip Girl has done all the hard work to get her where she is, but she has known how to play about with styles and dazzle us with unexpected combinations.

However, Leighton Meester hasn’t been quite so convincing when it comes to adapting the style from the series to everyday life, and it would seem that without the advice of Gossip Girl stylists, she may get things really wrong.

And also from New York, with a style straight out of high society, it seemed that overnight Olivia Palermo became quite the fashion icon on internet. This has been her year, with a very chic and refined style, and even the last crease in her trousers seems to have been thought out.

And from Spain, with every intention of staying on the international cinema and fashion circuit, Penélope Cruz has been confirmed as a serious contender for giving some style lessons: she does work and party looks to perfection. And she’s ideal for the ladylike style.

Among the British, Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss have all been vying for the crown, although the last two have had to give up given the increasing hits and fame of Alexa, who is dating Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and has become an icon to be copied.

I could add a thousand more names including Audrey Tautou (always with her impeccable French style), Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman and of course, another untouchable trendsetter: Rachel Bilson.
