Patches, tears and unstitchings: a trend for your jeans

It looks like the world economic crisis is being reflected on our clothes as a trend. Patches, tears and unstitchings have become decorations for our clothes, especially jeans.
Is this a way of making the economic crisis we’re in even more present? Or is it a way of rescuing past trends like grunge?
Either way, what’s true is that this spring distressed, torn or worn jeans or jeans full of patches will be all the rage, as you can see in the preview of MANGO’s Spring 2010 collection.
Patches bring a youthful and innocent touch to your look, like in the top photo. They really bring back the trousers we all wore as kids and which our mothers stitched up for us.
However, tears, unstitchings and fraying give them a more aggressive touch, more associated with a rock or grunge look. You already saw the rock style as one of the most popular trends in autumn-winter 2009. And it’s still around for spring.

This trend could be handy when it comes to rescuing old jeans that are a bit the worse for wear. You could put patches on them, fray the tears or even add a few strategic tears of your own. This is pure DIY philosophy.

And this trend is not just for jeans. You’ll also spot it on other denim items like jackets or waistcoats.
Ready to embrace the torn denim trend?
